Give plants and shrubs a boost by applying fertiliser. Blood, Fish & Bone gives a 3 stage release and Bonemeal will give a long slow release.
Feed lawns & treat for moss. A Weed, Feed & Moss killer will will do all 3 or you can target moss specifically with Sulphate of Iron.
Check roses for signs of Black Spot and spray with a treatment.
Also check roses for aphids and treat if necessary. Use any sprays towards the end of the day to avoid harming useful insects.
Trim winter flowering heathers and lavenders.
Prune shrubs which are grown primarily for their foliage. Feed with a general fertiliser after pruning.
Prune Forsythia and Camelia after flowering. Cut back the flowered shoots to 2 or 3 buds above the base.
Feed Black Currants, Blackberries & Hybrid Berries with a high nitrogen feed.
Towards the end of the month sow sweetcorn, marrows, courgettes, pumpkins & squashes under cover.
Keep sowing lettuce, radish, beetroot, peas, broad beans, salad onions & turnips.
Winter brassicas broccoli, cabbages, cauliflowers and Brussels sprouts can be put in to a seed bed.
Transplant any brassicas sown outside last month in to their permanent bed. Fit cabbage collars to protect them from cabbage root fly.
Continue sowing herbs.
Complete the sewing of hardy annuals
Keep frost protection on early flowering fruits during the night.
Shade greenhouses to protect young plants.
Check plants in greenhouses for Vine Weevil. Treat if necessary.
